Introducing Zeatrice, also known as “Miss Froggy Legs.” Zeatrice is not currently available for adoption, as she was surrendered to our care with heartworm disease. She is also the mother of the previewed puppies pictured below, and her story is one that we hope will reach the hearts of many. We are sharing her case to provide an important reminder about the need for consistent heartworm prevention. Although the Northwoods region is often associated with tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease, we are increasingly seeing dogs test positive for heartworms. Heartworm disease is a serious, potentially fatal condition that is difficult for dogs to endure and costly to treat. The disease is transmitted by mosquitoes, which can carry heartworm larvae from an infected animal to another dog.When left untreated, heartworm disease may cause significant and lasting damage to the heart, lungs, and associated blood vessels. Adult heartworms can grow up to one foot in length and reside in these vital areas, placing strain on a dog’s respiratory and circulatory systems. Clinical signs may include coughing, severe fatigue, weakness, weight loss, difficulty breathing, fluid accumulation, and, in advanced cases, heart failure or sudden collapse. For dogs like Zeatrice, prevention can mean the difference between a healthy future and a long, difficult recovery. At this time, Zeatrice is responding well to treatment, and we are grateful to the veterinary professionals supporting her care. Her recovery will require an extended and carefully managed course of treatment, including continued heartworm care, flea and tick prevention, annual wellness examinations, and follow-up blood testing.
